What a difference one year and a healthy throwing hand make, huh? After firing the most interceptions in the league despite playing just 12 games in 2022, Dak Prescott leads the NFL in touchdown passes in 2023 and is firmly in the middle of the MVP discussion.
Since the Cowboys’ blowout 42-10 loss to the 49ers in Week 5, Prescott has played some tremendous football. In the 7 games since, he’s completed over 70% of his passes for 310 yards per game and has a 21-2 TD-INT ratio. Dallas is 6-1 during that stretch.
It’s never just one thing when a player is performing at such a high level, and that’s certainly the case for Dak. He’s seeing and reading the field extremely well. He’s manipulating defenders. He’s putting the ball where he wants to.
You could see it on his first touchdown pass of the game vs. the Seahawks on Thursday night (complete with TNF Prime Vision graphics). On this play, the Cowboys sent CeeDee Lamb in motion and had a double-post route combination called:
Seattle would play quarters coverage in response:
The key here was field safety Quandre Diggs. Getting him to move inside would open up the post for Lamb. So Prescott kept his eyes down the middle of the field at the snap. That got Diggs to bite on the inside post just enough:
