Not too long ago, Cam Ward probably wouldn’t have been considered a worthy #1 overall pick.

That’s because he’s not a timing-and-rhythm passer. He leans on his scrambling and play-making ability. At times, there is a lack of discipline to his game.

That type of profile didn’t use to play well on Sundays.

But in today’s NFL, Ward’s style of play translates. And the bottom line is that he has enough ability, both physical and otherwise, for a QB-needy team like the Titans to hitch their wagon to him.

For this breakdown, I’m going to divide my analysis up into three parts. I’ll look at Ward’s physical traits, how he operates outside of the pocket, and then most importantly, how he functions within in.

Today’s breakdown will cover those first two elements.

Physical Traits

Let’s start with the tools Ward has to work with. Most importantly, how is he as a thrower?

I wouldn’t say Ward has a cannon. He’s not quite in Josh Allen and Justin Herbert’s class, for instance. But he’s got a strong enough arm to make any throw. And he likes to show it off by attacking at the intermediate and deep levels.

More importantly, he’s got great ball placement, routinely putting the ball on his receivers and in the right place relative to the defense.

He’s also shown the consistent ability to make every type of throw, including those requiring touch:
