This week at Football Film Room…
How far can Jordan Love take the Packers in 2023?
We’re all anxious to see what type of player Jordan Love will be after spending the last three seasons behind Aaron Rodgers. Despite what you hear from prognosticators who are absolutely certain about the future, we still really don’t have enough information.
His most recent college tape is from the 2019 season. His NFL experience (1 start and 83 pass attempts) is minimal. We’re standing in a dark tunnel with a flickering flashlight and trying to see what’s in front of us… [Click here to read the rest]
The Giants offense will have some new dimensions this season
It’s never wise to take too much from preseason games. Offenses generally aren’t showing their cards. Defenses tend to be vanilla. Starters don’t play much, if at all.
That warning aside, the Giants’ second preseason game showed just how different they’ll be on offense this year now that they’ve added a couple of players with skillsets that were nowhere to be found on the roster a year ago… [Click here to read the rest]
Don't sleep on the Washington Commanders
It’s easy to overlook the Washington Commanders. They were 7th in points allowed and 3rd in total yards. They were tough in both phases of the game, allowing the 6th-fewest runs of 10 yards or more and finishing as the NFL’s top-ranked defense on 3rd down… [Click here to read the rest]
Bonus article from earlier this offseason:
Aaron Rodgers hasn’t been a good playoff quarterback - he’s been a great one
No one is perfect in the playoffs. Not Joe Montana. Not Tom Brady. And not Aaron Rodgers. But in looking at his whole body of postseason work, it’s clear that he hasn’t been bad or even just an okay playoff quarterback. He’s been a great one.
That’s right. A great playoff quarterback.
Don’t believe me? Then read on as I dive into the evidence. Below, I’m going to look at Rodgers’ career performance across several key areas. I’ll break down his total numbers, his grades based on film study, and his performance on 3rd and 4th down (when everything is on the quarterback’s shoulders). I’ll look at “clutch” situations like the 4th quarter and overtime, 1-possession games, and 2-minute drills. Then I’ll look at the real reason he hasn’t had more team success.
And I’ll do all of this using the gold standard for great postseason quarterback play, Tom Brady, as the point of reference… [Click here to read the rest]
